Music is expensive but… Part 2

MY MUSIC MONDAY is here again people! Hope your weekend was as crazy and fun-filled as mine was. Lord Chestnut has missed you guys, I know because he told me when we chatted on BBM this morning and he wishes you all a favorable week ahead, me too oh! Here is what he has for us today:

Back to the issue; last week I talked about how you could promote your music through social media and get an inch to your dreams like #GOODMUSIC artistes (Getting Our Dreams Out). So today’s piece would be on Promotion. Basically I would say promoting your music means getting your music out there to a wide audience or a particular audience depending on your genre. It involves all medium of communication or media ranging from radio to television and in this jet age the internet. After making some good record, you could decide not to push it and just put it on a couple of sites and depending on the positive feedback would you now decide to either push it or leave it hanging.

I have listened to countless of interviews and also on personal contact realized that there is actually no timing to promote a record BUT most times it is advisable to when the buzz is still at its peak because the record would bounce on the buzz and push itself. While on the other hand, you could decide to shoot a quality video to push the record which would make the audience think that you just released a new record till they attempt to download would they find out it’s been online for couple of weeks.

Also another viable means which has proved highly effective is giving out some cash price to a worthy fan or fans through #Instagram or other social networks. The good thing about this is that you kill 2 birds with a stone, first being that you increase your fan base and secondly you also push the record.

Then another is #radiopromo. This is expensive because it involves doing promo shoots most times, then ending it up with promo cds. Promo cds are cds you gon’ distribute to radio djs, OAPs and any other person or persons you feel relevant. One can do this in two ways, drop your cd for a radio dj or an OAP and make sure it gets to the person OR do a Premiere BUT this doesn’t come free.

Can remember some time ago when some agent hooked the latter for my artistes and we couldn’t make it that day and they called asking for my headL. Think most times it could run to a couple of thousands because these radio stations also got bills to pay.

MY MUSIC MONDAY – Let’s talk about the GRAMMYS… How are you all doing this amazing but hot Monday morning? It is obvious the Ozone layer has finally depleted, I feel like I’m being cooked… nah! deep fried alive! Anyway, hope your weekend was amazing? MY MUSIC MONDAY is here again and our connoisseur has some sweet gist for us about the 58th Grammy Awards that took place last week.

Let’s talk about the rap album of the year for 2016 Grammys

Hiyaaa *waving* The 58^th Grammys has come and gone and thank God Africa got one in person of Angelique Kidjo, the legendary singer from Benin Republic. We keep waiting on the edge of our seats for the first Nigerian that’s gonna bring it home as history would be made. Now let’s switch up readers…

*singing* Every nigga is a star… that’s how the rap album of 2016 Grammys starts and the award goes to K-dot! a.k.a. Kendrick Lamar (front-liner for Top Dawg Entertainment) who also bagged four other awards unlike last year. Fellow album nominees are, 2014 Forest Hills Drive by J.Cole, If Your Reading This It’s Too Late by Drizzy Drake, Compton by Dr Dre and Pink Print by Nicki Minaj.

Great year already, innit dawg for Kendrick? Mostly because it’s gonna make him go harder which would result in him blessing his real fans who gonna stand with him whether he switches up styles like Jesse Jagz or stay static like Mode-nine.

Now to the discussion of the day which is, “2014 Forest Hills Drive, a better album”? Done by the man who idolises Nas, the legend by name J.Cole and as Kanye would put it, “and what does it take to be a legend like Nas is’’? That question was actually popped to me by my Gee @kakimun_ who feels Cole’s album was a more shiznit than Kendrick. So I decided to put two good friends who have a collaborative album to drop this year side by side. Also just to state that I got both albums and so can say something tangible and correct based on subjectivity.

Jermaine Cole’s third studio album dropped on the 9^th of December 2014 by Dreamville, Roc Nation and Columbia Records. The title is connected to the name of his childhood address where he lived with his mum, brother and stepfather. The album is a 13 tracker that has been certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as of January 2016 and has picked couple of awards for best rap album. I actually picked interest in it not just because I’m a HUGE fan but for apparently the first single I watched on Soundcity which made me conclude I was gonna get it. On that record he talked about his childhood home been foreclosed, then apologized to his momma and his girlfriend for being absent in their lives while going to chase dreams in New York City.

Also another worthy note that makes it a classic album to me is because he brought out his lyricism to our faces on January 28^th adding some rhymes making it a timeless piece. If that track and Love yours doesn’t encourage you niccuh, then you sure need some divine aid. Then Wet dreams was the usual Cole telling us in his poetic form some story about a girl he crushed on with some fat ass. Fire Squad basically talks about how niggas brag but act like a hoe while being scared to make moves unlike him who took the bull by the horn. G.O.M.D which stands for ‘Get Off My D**k’, spits about how he fears no one and how he’s the best kept secret via Hov. I really love the part where he goes, “I wanna go back to Jermaine lemme tell you bout it’’. Then the next great record on the album should be the one that goes, “don’t save her, she don’t wanna be saved’’ titled No Role Models. Lol… that’s harsh Cole but like the cliché, “heaven helps those who help themselves’’. And then the Note To Self, the outro was really touching especially the part that goes, “love you mommaaaaaaaaa’’.

Gotta give it to the kid because the album is balanced with inspirational lines, realistic tendencies, bitter truth, some bragging lines, the ego boosting lines and to cap it all great samples.

MY MUSIC MONDAY… Hey folks! What’s popping? It is MY MUSIC MONDAY again and Mr Chestnut has a very important lecture for all our upcoming artistes on how they can make cash from making music. I’m sorry we weren’t here last week, I went on an unexpected journey to a land without technology. Don’t worry I’d write about the land on Wednesday. Let’s see what Mr Henry Chestnut has today;

Importance of this cannot be over-emphasized especially to kick start a career, for instance, you need a good PR, a high quality video, managers and sound engineers that need to be taken care of. So no matter how magnanimous an artist you think you are and how huge the love you got for your genre, and it seems you are not getting returns for all the energy expended in studio sessions & the sleepless nights, then you might need to make some few changes so as to know what is wrong.

But in this part of our world, commercial music is the bandwagon as everyone wants to move to the island and drive an SUV. So I guess for one who doesn’t believe in the kind of music he does or his brand, then might switching lanes be your hugging partner while I pray you last in un-originality.

MY MUSIC MONDAY…

Basically with the advent of internet, artists have been able to reach a wider audience and gotten their music on international scale while making money off some platforms but on the long run have lost more than what was supposed to be gained due to free downloads and leaking of albums and records.

Lack of a proper structure to fight this copyright and intellectual property theft has been the crux of this epidemic but some labels have been fighting and containing this in the best possible ways leading the revolution we all await, label like Chocolate City Music make it practically hard for the public to freely download their records or albums not put for free, if you doubt me try downloading any of their artist’s album. Also notjustok.com has joined this worthy cause especially as being the leader for online music. I’m also not leaving Spinlet out of this which can be termed as our itunes of Nigeria as they sell albums for as low as N20.00 or N30.00.

I actually foresee Nigerians paying for songs and not the regular free downloads except when the artist gives it for free, meaning no one should make a dime off it without paying royalties to the management or the artist. If a solid structure could be laid digitally, then physically would be a thing of past bearing in mind the digitalized village we are in currently. We have to appreciate these people even if not for their talent but because it’s become a career for them and also cause they got bills to pay. Money without fame is the worst form of social position anyone can find him or herself.

Back to the topic, there are several ways to monetize your music but in this part of the world we have some we are familiar with. Generally there is Tidal owned by rapper and mogul Jay-z, Spotify, itunes, Youtube, Vevo, Spinlet, Ringback tunes, etc. Some of the platforms listed has to do videos while the rest are audio. It takes nothing or more to sign up with them and get bucks instead of the regular reliance on show money or endorsement deals which is why a good and enlightened management is highly required in this music business.

Also just taught of how much the government can make off this sector if they can only revamp it and reduce the risk level for potential investors. Does an artist know that an unauthorized use of his song is a copyright infringement? Do they know that they are entitled to be shown record(s) of how many subscribers subscribed in a month to their tune? Does an established artist know that he can ask for increment in his percentage considering he has grown to become a brand and gives them the biggest pay-check? All this questions still boil down to the level of enlightenment an artist possesses and his management.

Well, you obviously don’t need to introduce yourself, as you’re indeed a well known artiste, but for those who don’t know you, please tell us a little more about yourself and who you are?

 Okay. I’m Felix Emeka Otuokere by name, stage name Dialect. I’m a hiphop/high-life singer/producer. A pure native of Imo state, but grew up in Delta state.

Aww, that’s very lovely. So speculation about your new single ‘Azunauka’ is just everywhere, please can you tell us about the single?

 Azuanuka is my latest single, dropped few weeks ago and as it stands we are getting overwhelming response from fans. Azuanuka is actually quite different from what l’m known for; I think that’s why my fans are all smiling at this one. The song is really trending.

That’s very sweet. Yes indeed we can see how much love the fans have for it… please tell us what inspired the single?

‘Azuanuka’ is an Igbo term, which means ‘deaf ears’, the song is a piece for people to relate to when you have gossips around you.

I was inspired by circumstances around me at that time. When I recorded, I was going through a very critical time and those people who were supposed to support me were the ones gloating. Azuanuka is not just a song; it’s an expression of my redemption.

 It’s actually my first official single after Morgan Entertainment dumped me. Lolz

Lolz. Yes I did notice it was more than a song, because you talked about people popping champagne and yet broke, please throw more light on that particular verse?

Well… it’s a normal thing, a whole lot of people tend to live that fake life so you think they have made it. I’ve seen it all, people like this can promise you heaven even while you both are feasting in hell

Well now you mentioned being dumped by Morgan Entertainment, we will love to clear  the air. Rumours have it that you’re having issues with your record label Morgan Entertainment or will I say previous record label, please how true is that and can you leak what could be the reason?

Well, I won’t say much on this for now, but believe me, there’s much to say about this but I’m going save that for later. To cut the long story short, I was abandoned by Morgan entertainment; the man was nice enough to open up to me in my fourth year with him that he can no longer continue. I had to move on. Which I did.

It’s really a sad thing to hear but thats what life is all about, it has ups and down. So that is to say you’re very much open for any record label that comes your way?

Yea. I learned my lessons. Of course I am very open to any serious deal. Be it record label or sponsors.

I can’t end this interview without asking about your relationship status, cause a nigga like you will definitely have lots of ladies clinging unto you, so please tell us a little about your relationship status. Are you single or taken and when do you plan on getting married cause you aren’t getting any younger ooo lolz?

Lolz. With everything I’ve been through, I’m more focused on my career now for it to grow. I’ve got a whole lot to prove wrong.

Meanwhile, I’m flesh and blood, so lets say I mingle too, though nothing serious at the moment . But I might shock you with a wedding bell kinda story anytime if you’re not careful lolz

Bro, i am willing to go with any serious platform. There’re people here who understand the industry, they know how to make business out of what others see as a hobby.

Okay that’s cool… You indeed have a strong spirit. Tell us why you are based in Awka instead of Lagos like other musicians?

Studied sociology in Unizik so I kinda have a base here. But I don’t base in Awka anymore, I stay in Lagos now. Though once your base is always your spot, so I get to come around a lot. Coupled with the issues I got with my former record label, I needed to come back home to seek assistance from ndi nwe obodo if u know what I mean. So that perception is wrong.

Yea, I love Anambra too and I represented Anambra via my career but Anambra refused to support or acknowledge my effort. Well, that’s by the way.

#AZUANUKA   is a big project for me. I will project it with all I’ve got. There’s been a lot of progress already, more surprise coming your way besides the video which has been shot and ready for fans. video drops very soon.

So please can we know you? I know your a model but please enlighten us more about who you are?

Ok my name is Amanda Peterson. A model, an actress and an entertainer, I hail from Nimo in Njikoka LGA. The first child from a family of 5.

Aww, very lovely, that’s to say your quite a tall lady?

Yes I am. 5:11ft

Hmm, that’s quite tall. So are you working with an agency?

I own my agency though i run it with an Awka top fashion designer Kc Charles and a friend Adams Oche. Don dams Kc Charles modeling agency is the name. I’m currently learning beading to help boost my career.

Those are quite strong names you mentioned there?
Well that aside though, we heard about the good news, that’s one of the main reason for this interview, lolz so tell us about the engagement?

Aww! Ok it actually happened on Vals day, at my home. He came visiting, after having lunch he knelt and popped the question. I was shy at first that I covered my face with my hands. I was actually saying thank you Jesus. Then I said YES!!.
My bride price was paid on the 20th of February, which was also my dad’s birthday. Double celebration.

O..boy the brother is so romantic, did he know that, that was your dads birthday ?

Yes he deliberately did it.

Lolz, that’s so a sweet guys, do you mind sharing with us a little bit of how you guys met each other?

Well we met 6yrs ago. In-fact it was the former governor His Excellency Mr Peter Obi’s second tenure campaign that brought him to my house in the villa. He came for a youth meeting and I unknowingly distracted him. He then got my digits from my cousin and started draining my battery with calls. So we fixed an appointment to see each other at Crunchies fast food. We met and after his long story I told him to give me some time to think about it. My plan was to discharge him because he wasn’t actually my taste. But he never stopped calling. I gave up and accepted to date him on the 10th of February 2010. He actually made me keep that date.


Hmm, no be small talk ooo, well that’s very lovely to know… so what next now with the both of you?

We are currently planning our wedding, which would hold on the 30th of April 2016 at St Joseph the worker Chaplaincy Awka. The reception is at my father’s compound Nimo. And you are invited.

And I have dedicated my life to get Biafra or I die trying to restore Biafra. The reason why my mother gave birth to me, is to restore and save Biafrans.”

“He added:”The Biafran race will be cleaned up from the face of the earth, you will come back home, if you are living outside the country, you will no longer no the road to your fathers land.

Kanu further stated that there is no regret in his dictionary, adding that he is ready to spend a thousand years in a prison… Restore Biafra

“I said and will continue to say that, is either the flag of Biafra is raised up, or I am lowered in the grave,” the Biafra leader noted.

While being asked what he wants to say to his supporters, Kanu said: “ProBiafra means supporters of Biafra, we are Biafrans, so I can’t be a supporter of Biafra. And also we are not trying to secede from Nigeria. We are older than Nigeria. You can only talk about seceding if Biafrans are they ones that colonized Nigeria. But we are older than that contraption. So we can’t secede rather we just want to go back the way we were before the British came. It is Biafra or death, even Buhari knows that”.

Kanu, who is a dual British-Nigerian citizen, was arrested in Lagos in October by Nigerian intelligence agents during a visit from London.

NOLLYWOOD FILMMAKER, NDAVE DAVID NJOKU SPEAKS

There are a lot of amazingly creative individuals out there but very few dedicated among them. One of these amazingly creative dedicated personnel is Nollywood Producer and Director, Ndave David Njoku.

This gracious young man hails from Ukelefi in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu state but was born and bred in Abraka, Delta state. Ndave is the last kid from a family of seven children and grew up without a father owing to the untimely demise when Ndave was just 14 years old.

Growing up was a bit tough for Ndave due to the fact that he didn’t have a father figure to lean on most times for guidance, but his mother who is a God-fearing woman succeeded in her capacity in raising him with a Christian law book. The street tried to pull him down but his mother’s adherence to the Bible’s rule; ‘train up a child in the way he should grow and when he is old, he shall not depart from it’ kept him up on Holy grounds and made him who he is today.

Ndave David Njoku did both his secondary and tertiary education in Abraka, the tertiary institute being Delta State University (DELSU) to be precise.

When asked how the whole movie career started Ndave David Njoku said,

Acting is an in-born desire that I have never allowed any pressure quench. At first my family didn’t believe in it, but it never stopped me from pursuing my dream. My favorite subjects back then in secondary school were English language and Literature, and I preferred the Drama unit in church to any other department. Any church I saw without a Drama unit was boring to me… all for the love of acting.

Ndave’s first audition was in 2004 under the supervision of Mr. Perfect, who cajoled him and told him he had no future in the movie scene. The next day he went back to the audition ground and took a piece out of their script. He used the script to modify and story in his head and wrote a 4-page script. He took the script to St. Paul Catholic Church, Delsu and went for an outing with the drama team. From there people began encouraging him to venture into the movie world.

Although he never studied Theatre Arts, Ndave found himself on so many stage acts.

His first movie was SMACK DOWN, where he co-starred with A-list actors like Van Vicker, Chiwetalu Agu and Uche Jombo. He then produced a short film titled THE WAR LORD and 2008, Ndave wrote, co-directed and also was a co-executive producer alongside Oshilim Gabriel and Oshilim Anthony, a movie, WICKED CONSCIENCE, starring Chiwetalu Agu, John Paul, Uche Elendu, and Emmanuel Ahummadu a.k.a. Labista.

The movie had a poor turn out and he went in for a four year break.

In 2012, Ndave started from scratch as a location manager in Awka, Anambra state. A year later he combined both location manager and the position of production manager. Then he went into Producing again and has made the following movies;

• JohnPaul and Rebecca
• The Widower
• Broken Bottle
• Little Calabash
• Plantain girl
• Ghetto Packaging
• Oh Blood Money
• Sorrows of Nene
• Tears of Nene, etc.

In 2015, Ndave David Njoku co-produced the first ever blockbuster cinema movie in the Eastern region, THE LAST KIDNAP. The movie was produced by KAS-VID International and directed by Ifeanyi Ikenyi a.k.a. Mr. Hollywood.

This year 2016 gave Ndave the opportunity to shoot his first short cinema film titled THE INHALER by CD Initiative Films. He also co-produced another blockbuster, POLYGAMOUS FAMILY starring Pete Edochie, Remi Ohajianya, Imet Goodluck .a.k.a. Tallest man. The film was produced by OG Best International.

Recently he is working on a new movie starring Nkem Owoh, Tana Adelena Egbo and others, for AMACO Investment and just concluded a movie project for Dekross Productions.

When I see people doing what they love to do without stress

this was the answer he gave when asked his greatest inspiration. And when asked where he sees himself in 3 years he said,

Only God knows.

His hobbies are making researches and playing games.

Sorry, I wrote and directed Crime and Justice, I wasn’t the one that produced it. Naija version of Vampires’ diary… It’s more like ghost hunting series, the sex demons (Incubus and Succubus) vs Humans… It’s gonna be a tough match so get ready.

Very scary, don’t know if I’m ready for scary stuffs, but i bet my girl would be!. Well we already know you are an Igbo young man, an ambitious one, so how do you make your money from all these?

That’s correct, I don’t have and I’m not searching for one.

But You’re not a gay right?

Well in this new age, that’s how it seems to work. But as you say you’re single, we will keep Frienditegossip on when news about you comes up. Lol

So, what do you plan to achieve in the movie industry?

A lot, there are some untold stories/histories waiting to be told. Currently we (Razor Edge Films) are working on a project (something Traditional, though we are still on Preproduction), which I’m sure everyone around the world especially people from the eastern part of Nigeria will love. I want to make people happy, entertain them, as well as educate them… That’s what I wish to achieve in the movie industry.

That’s very lovely. What’s your opinion about producers who sleep with actresses before a role is given to them?

Any girl who will sleep with a producer for a movie role, lacks confidence and should be blamed for it, when you are good in what you do, producers will come after you with movie roles. Its never professional for a producer to have any intimate relationship with their actors/actresses because the production will surely suffer when you begin to loose their respect. Business should be Business.

Well I have heard and interviewed a lady who was very good but because she refused to have sex with the producer she was dropped. Even popular actor Emeka Ike admitted it and mentioned names of producers who sleeps with actresses for roles, so what do you have to say about that?

Like I said earlier, it’s not professional especially in my kind of Movies that requires more investors, you don’t risk people’s money to satisfy your selfish being… Business should be Business.

Well said. So what’s your advice to ladies going through such humiliation all in the name of being an actress?

It’s not worth it; respect your body. Only God can make your dream a reality. Believe in yourself and work hard for every single thing you wish to have, nothing is impossible.

And what do you have to say to producers who sleeps with actress because of role parts?

Until I come across any, I reserve my comments.

Are you saying they don’t exist or are you protecting the image of the producers?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not and will never protect anyone with such evil and unfair behavior, what I’m saying is that am yet to meet that kind of producer.

But do you believe such producers exist?

Nothing is impossible.

So you said something about you currently shooting a traditional video or something of that nature, do you mind opening our eyes to it?

Yes, I’m currently working on a script titled “Traditional Law”. A wonderful story aimed at educating the youths from the eastern part of Nigeria on the norms of the Igbo Land (relating to marriage/relationship).

You mentioned above, about you being into comedy skits, well I believe I have watched about two or three and they are quite hilarious. But what inspired you to venture into this?

First of all, I love comedy and I know the impact of comedy in the society, and currently in a country like Nigeria, we can’t do without it. It’s our everyday life, so I had to give people what they wanted, I might not be as good as being a stand up comedian, but i know that i can act, so i decided to start up skit-making with my brother and friend Congo (concord Oguejiofor)











All right, that’s a lovely thought, considering how hard life is currently here in Nigeria. But don’t you spend money in the production of all this?

Wow, that’s lovely. If I may ask, what has been your challenges so far in this comedy skit productions?


Thank you, finance is really vital in every production, then characters, sometimes getting a particular kind of character you need in a production is not really easy even with friends.
 Then critics will be there to tell you your flaws. Most people do not know how to criticise a work, they just discourage you without giving you an idea on how to make it better. There was a particular video I made, my close friends condemned it, I was so shy to upload the video, it almost made me stop making videos. Later on, I sent the video to some other persons.

 Along the line, people started talking about the video and how funny it was.


Well that’s to say peoples’ opinions differ. So what has then kept you going?

The fact that I have a target and a goal. I want to be self-made and God is really giving me the courage, and there are signs of a better tomorrow

I’ve come to learn quite few tricks while praying, I’ve studied different religion and their beliefs and style of praying. I must confess I make use of a little bit of every style

Islamic: Before praying, washes their mouth, face, private parts, just so they can be clean before the presence of God.

Catholics: Prays more about peace and forgiveness, they always don’t just pray for themselves but for the whole world (The Divine Mercy prayer). They also let you read the Bible without even knowing you are (through the rosary).

Pentecostal: Radical prayers, they attack and fight the battles themselves. No time for peace, they want instant action. (Very good against stubborn spirits)

Deeper life: Teaches you decency in your way of dressing, helping you help others to avoid lusting after you.

SCOAN: Teaches you the Bible and how to pray, let you understand that God cares about only your heart/soul. Helps you understand the deep things of God and what God expects from you.

CMDM (Christ Mercy Land Deliverance Ministry): Here you meet raw power, you learn how to fight with prayers and how to destroy whatever obstacles coming your way.

They’re so many churches and what to learn from them, study them and pick the part that helps you grow to a better person.

Honestly, when i read it i got really pissed you know why? Apparently, there is sexual harassment, it’s everywhere especially in the entertainment industry, be it modeling, movies or music. Every Nigerian knows that girls are being taken advantage of.

Am not taking it personal, its just that its getting out of hand. even the bible said u should remove what is in your eye so u can see clearly before removing for others. i don’t like it when people act like saints wen they are not.

Most girls actually go for pageants because of the star prize only to discover that they only used it to get girls to contest. But i believe that if u really know what you want to do with the crown then the star prize shouldn’t stop you.
i didn’t get a car but I have actually gained a lot with the name.

Good idea, so what have you then done with your crowns after winning them?

After visiting the tank fire victims at Onitsha last year. i decided to stop posting my charity works which i still do on a low key till am prepared to do something big that is going to hit Anambra and Naija like a bomb lol. I have visited a lot of motherless babies and disabled homes and currently i have stickler’s that i take care of. i provide them with the little i have not because i have much but because i know what it feels to have nothing. I have been hungry, stranded, wearing same set of cloths so i know how it feels. i love charity and its like my life that’s why i do it every blessed day. It doesn’t have to be much, each beggar i see i make sure i reach out

Well my advice for them is to stop because its not going to take them anywhere. He will sleep with them and end up giving another person the role. They should please stop doing to girls what they don’t want other guys to do to their daughters and sisters. Karma only allows you to reap what you sow. No matter the temptations, they should resist it. Feature those who are good and advice the rest to try again some other time.
Most of them don’t know that it can stop them from progressing because they don’t know her spiritual personality
