Emma Nyra
Emma Chukwugoziam Obi popularly known as Emma Nyra is a Nigerian afro-pop and afro R&B singer and songwriter. She hails from Delta state, Nigeria. She was born in California on the 18th of July 1988 and was raised in Texas. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Administration at the Texas Southern University Houston, Texas.
Music Career
Emma Nyra developed interest in music when she was young, she made up songs and also mimicked every song sang on the radio with her sister. At the age of six, when asked what she wanted to study she said she wanted to sing but her parents did not approve. She studied health administration because it was familiar to her, her father; Emmanuel Obi is a pharmacist and her mother; Maryann Obi had a home health practice in Texas.
She did her first show in 2009 when she opened up for P-Square and J Martins. In 2010, she performed on a major platform; the Nigerian Independence Day Parade in New York, Nigerian Reunion Houston, Florida and NYC. Also in that same year Emma Nyra met her manager, Ubi Franklin during one of her Christmas visits to Nigeria.
In 2012, Emma Nyra came to Lagos after her manager helped to convince her parents to allow her move to Nigeria. Her manager linked her with producer D’tunes who produced her first two official singles ‘Ori Mu Wu’ and ‘Everything I Do’. Ever since then there has been no looking back.
The sexy diva, Emma Nyra featured in Your Waist by Iyanya and that song brought her to the limelight. She was signed to Made Men Music Group (MMMG) label in March 2012, MMMG label is headed by Ubi Franklin with artistes including Iyanya and Tekno.
Girl Power Movement
Emma Nyra left MMMG label claiming that she wants to dedicate herself to a girl power movement.
“I am no longer with the label … no, nothing happened I just didn’t renew my contract. I wanna do ‘female movement’, that’s what I want to do, yeah”
Emma Nyra has released several hit tracks; in 2015 she collaborated with Cynthia Morgan and Victoria Kimani on the song Vex to validate their star statues.
Emma Nyra listed Tiwa Savage, Omawunmi and Waje as artistes that motivate her:
“They made it possible for someone like me. If there were no female artistes, I don’t think I would have come this far because I would not have seen anybody doing what I do now. Seeing women do what I do only encouraged me that I can do same.”
Other Interest
Apart from music, Emma Nyra is good in sports; she was a gymnast and a volleyball player, she represented America in the junior Olympics. While she was in the university, she did runway and print modeling for TC Designs. She was also a radio presenter for Flytime Entertainment. Emma Nyra was also a part of Nollywood and worked with the likes of Ini Edo and Desmond Elliot; she played the role of Naomi in Rebound which was directed in Nollywood USA by Desmond Elliot.
This diva is all about Girl Power and she wants to empower female artistes in Nigeria. Emma Nyra won the Nigerian Entertainment Award for Most Promising Female Artist 2014.
