Mark Zuckerberg Tops the 2015 New Establishment List—and Snags the October Cover!

Facebook chairman and C.E.O. Mark Zuckerberg has struck deals with The New York Times and BuzzFeed to publish articles directly into users’ pages. He’s reportedly negotiating with record labels and content providers to secure rights to music videos and scripted shows. And, if he has his way, virtual reality may someday soon connect every person in the world. These are just a few of the reasons why Zuckerberg tops Vanity Fair’s 2015 New Establishment Disrupters list, a milestone the magazine celebrates by featuring the mogul on the October cover, in a photo by Annie Leibovitz.

“At 31, Mark Zuckerberg stands out as something of an elder statesman,” Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter writes in his October editor’s letter. “He is far and away the youngest person ever to grab the top spot on the New Establishment list. He has not only proved himself as a brilliant entrepreneur; he may well become one of the great long-haul corporate leaders of the past half-century. . . . The $240 billion company he scratched out of his dorm room at Harvard is apparently just his first step toward world domination in the realm of social networking.”

The Disrupters list ranks 50 innovators who have defined the year in terms of how we interact, how we work and play, and what cultural products we consume and how. Uber’s Travis Kalanick, comedian Amy Schumer, and Instagram C.E.O. Kevin Systrom join Zuckerberg in this year’s group of wave makers. A companion list, the Powers That Be, catalogues 25 visionary executives and entertainers who have consolidated their spheres of influence while continuing to affect the culture in new ways. This year’s No. 1: Taylor Swift, who makes her first appearance on the list after using her platform to make giant companies like Apple conform to her will. She joins previously established powers that be including the Walt Disney Company’s Bob Iger; James, Rupert, and Lachlan Murdoch; and HBO’s Richard Plepler.
