COMFORT ZONE IS JUST A DOME

I put it to you that your COMFORT ZONE is just a DOME

Comfort Zone is a beautiful place but nothing ever grows there, according to Wikipedia, is a psychological state in which a person feels familiar, at ease, in control and experiences low anxiety and stress. In the zone a steady level of performance is possible. Bardwick defines the term as,

a behavioral state where a person operates in an anxiety-neutral position.

Brown describes it as,

Where our uncertainty, scarcity and vulnerability are minimized — where we believe we’ll have access to enough love, food, talent, time, admiration. Where we feel we have some control.

To me, Comfort Zone is a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress.

Human Mentality is most times f**ked. Some people utter words lyrically like

I can make it only in the back ally,

forgetting that as a human being you can make it anywhere as long as you choose the right things to hear. They just tie themselves up in their comfort zone; stepping out of the comfort zone raises much anxiety, in fact it generates a stress response so tiring that it becomes hard work. This results in an enhanced level of concentration.

We surely have heard people say that we need to get out of our comfort zones and stretch ourselves. But that isn’t all the comfort zone is about; getting out of your comfort zone isn’t just when you try out something new, anything that increases your anxiety level is surely something outside your comfort zone.

It is true that anxiety is not something we should be after on a normal day but a little bit is essentially and surprisingly beneficial. We mostly need just a shove of anxiety to get that work done, or to improve our performance.

COMFORT ZONE IS JUST A DOMECOMFORT ZONE IS JUST A DOME

Anyway I believe that Comfort zone is just a dome that we decide to place ourselves under. We say it is who we are or that situations and society has placed us there but we fail to understand that uncertainty is the key to achieving a great level of anxiety, and this in turn aids in achieving amazing things outside that comfort zone. There is a reason playing video games or cooking dinner is easy, that’s because you have become familiar with it and you know what to expect. Painting for the first time or riding a bike or beginning a new job are stuffs that has uncertainty written all over it, therefore anxiety. Familiarity is easy and comfortable so it isn’t a surprise that new stuffs gets our guards up.

Funny enough our brain thinks,

Hey, we’ve tried this before and didn’t die. So it is safe to do it again.

Trying new stuffs outside our comfort zone takes energy, so when we’re feeling tired we’re more likely to build habits than take risk on a new activity.

Leave your comfort zone today, get out of the dome you have created over yourself. Getting out from under the dome would surely help you grow. Not only will you grow but your comfort zone will grow (the things you are involved in will increase), and you’ll be able to enjoy more things in life.

Bear in mind that doing new things motivates us and helps us learn. It is important to push the boundaries of our comfort zone because you’ll find it easier to brainstorm and harness your creativity. This is a soft benefit, trying new things can make us reflect on our old ideas and where they clash with our new knowledge, and inspire us to learn more and challenge comfirmation bias, our tendency to only seek out information we already agree with. Even in the short term, a positively uncomfortable experience can help us brainstorm, see old problems in a new light, and tackle the challenges we face with new energy.

COMFORT ZONE IS JUST A DOME

Trust yourself and start making small decisions today. Your life begins at the end of your comfort zone.
